NE 412 | Welcome

Dear Nuclear Engineering Senior Design Class,

Welcome to NE 412! A few important things before classes start:
  1. We will be using Slack for our main communication platform: uw-ne.slack.com. Please join. You can download it on your phone and computers, or use it in a web browser.
  2. You will need to submit a request for using the MCNP software for neutronics calculations. Here are the instruction for MCNP accessYou will need to do so before classes start, so that you have access to the software in time.
  3. You will need to obtain your Blue Permit from the student machine shop, in order to use the equipment in the Maker Space, which will be a requirement for your projects.
  4. Please fill in this pre-class survey.
A couple of additional pieces of information:
  1. Assignment #1 asks you to find a news or magazine article on nuclear energy that exemplifies something that needs to be fixed in the nuclear industry. You can start working on this question already. There are some news sources on this blog post.
  2. 3D drawing and 3D printing will be tools that you’ll be using for your projects. If you’re not familiar with SolidWorks or another CAD software, I recommend that you work through some of the SolidWorks video tutorials. The folks at the Maker Space can probably also advise you on ways to learn a 3D drawing software.
  3. We will also be using MCNP; there is more information on this blog post.
  4. Our first class meeting is Wednesday, January 24th in EH 2331. Class meets every week MW 11.30am-2pm in EH 2331 and your attendance is expected. If you are a senior in nuclear engineering you should be signed up for 5 units, even if the system might give you options for a range of units.
Looking forward to an exciting set of senior design projects!
Raluca
