5 credits: 5 hours of in-class time, 10 hours of independent work per week

MW 11.30am – 2pm, EH 2331

Course objectives

  1. Apply nuclear engineering technical skills in the context of design.
  2. Learn design thinking methodology as applied to engineering design.
  3. Learn about quality assurance and documentation.
  4. Develop peer review as second nature.
  5. Learn about testing, and design of experiments.
  6. Learn how to build a team.
  7. Practice managing uncertainty in decision-making. “How do you take risks?”
  8. Practice leadership and project management.

  1. Assignment #1: News – personal
  2. Assignment #2: Project Proposal – personal – graded 10%
  3. Meeting memos – team/personal
  4. Prototypes #1, #2, #3 – team
  5. Peer reviews #1, #2, #3 – team – graded 30%
  6. Mid-semester reflection – personal
  7. Final Report & Final Presentation team – graded 60%
  8. End of semester reflection – personal

A > 90%, B > 80%, C > 70%, D > 60%, F > 50%

You must pass all pass/no pass assignments in order to get  passing grade in the class.

Class format

Class time will be used for guest lectures, in-class exercises, team meetings, and discussions about ethics in nuclear engineering lead by NE 231 students. You attendance is expected.

Use slack to reach me, your colleagues in the class, and the seniors students. You can ask questions, answer questions, share interesting resources, and send direct messages to me or anyone in the class.

Edublogs

Each team has to create a blog to which you will post all of your assignments for this course. The purpose of submitting your assignments online is to share what you learn with everybody else in rest of the world that’s interested in learning about nuclear engineering.

You are welcome to post to this blog any other interesting material or resources that you wish, in order to make it a more comprehensive and useful website. It is something you can showcase and share with your friends, potential employees, colleagues. You can continue to develop it after the end of the semester.
