Due date: 8am, Friday Feb. 9th
Reading assignment: Pigford, Nuclear Chemical Engineering, Ch 5 (sections 5.1, 5.2, 5.6, 5.7, 5.8.2, 5.8.3, 5.9.1-5.9.6, 5.9.8) + Tsoufanidis, The Nuclear Fuel Cycle, Chapter 2.
Assignment:
- Add to your world map the spatial information provided in the assigned readings (Pigford 5.6-5.7 and Tsoufanidis Ch 2.4.5-2.10). The data includes: uranium resources and reserves of different recovery costs and different types, uranium mines of different kinds, uranium purification and conversion plants, uranium production, uranium mills. (note: You don’t need to do additional research than the data already provided in the readings, but you are welcome to it if you wish – it will be useful for your team project at the end of the semester. Optional useful resource: NURE Data.)
- Problems 5.1 and 5.7 from Pigford, 2.3 and 2.5 from Tsoufanidis.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the sources, types, and distribution of uranium natural resources.
- Understand the ore processes of uranium exploration, mining, milling, purification, and conversion.
- Understand the radiotoxicity of uranium ore, and of the byproducts of the processes involved in UO2 production.
